Suzanne Gavenus, Burnsville resident, to appear on November ballot for

NC House District 85

Burnsville, NC — Suzanne Gavenus, a Burnsville resident, counselor, and educator, is a candidate

for the North Carolina House of Representatives in District 85 and will appear on the November ballot,

representing Avery, McDowell, Mitchell, and Yancey counties.

Gavenus brings more than three decades of experience working at the intersection of mental health,

education, and community support. She currently serves as Director of Counseling and Wellness at

the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics’ Morganton campus. She has lived in

Burnsville for over 23 years with her husband, Gary, where they raised their three children, and

previously lived and worked in Avery County.

“This campaign is about showing up, listening, and delivering real solutions for the people of Western

North Carolina,” Gavenus said. “Our communities deserve leadership that understands what families

are facing day to day—and is willing to do the work to address it.”

Gavenus’s campaign is centered on the core challenges facing rural mountain communities. She is

focused on expanding access to affordable healthcare and mental health services, strengthening

public schools and supporting educators, and improving economic stability for working families

through addressing the rising cost of housing, childcare, and everyday expenses for working families.

Gavenus has also emphasized the importance of long-term recovery following Hurricane Helene,

noting that many communities are still rebuilding.

“This is a defining moment for our region,” Gavenus said. “Recovery doesn’t end when the immediate

crisis passes. We need long-term investment in housing, infrastructure, and local economies so our

communities can rebuild stronger and be better prepared for the future.”

Drawing on her career working directly with individuals, families, schools, and boards, Gavenus said

she will bring a practical, people-first approach to Raleigh.

“I’ve spent my life helping people navigate systems when they aren’t working,” she said. “That’s the

perspective I’ll bring to public service—focused on accountability, common-sense solutions, and

making sure rural communities are no longer overlooked.”
