Marion letter writer: We are facing a 'nightmare' equivalent to early Nazi terrorism

Silence in the face of what is happening is not only compliance, it is giving permission for the administration to defy the moral standards for which this nation was once known and respected.

Our immigration system is broken. In January of 2024, there was a bipartisan bill created which would have addressed many of the issues that cause problems for U.S. citizens and immigrants alike. Donald Trump successfully lobbied Republicans to block the bill's passage so that he could use immigration as a campaign issue.

Today, the nightmare being unleashed on primarily Black and Brown people in this nation is the equivalent of the early stages of Nazi terrorism against Jews in Germany. Argue with me if you wish, but if you don't see it, you are ignorant of history. And if it doesn't upset you because it is happening to people who don't look like you, shame on you. And if you can callously say they are all illegal (which I see a lot from folks these days) you are ignorant, or racist or unfeeling. If you can read the reports from people experiencing the cruelty and evil in their community, and if you can see visual evidence and not feel the pain of others, something is wrong with you. And if you claim to be a follower of Jesus, you don't know Jesus very well.

We are in serious trouble as a nation. We are hardened to the suffering of others; we are susceptible to manipulation for political gain; we are unwilling to admit the cruelty that is happening in our name; we have traded morality for a thirst for power; and we have forgotten that the generations that came before us fought valiantly against great odds and in many cases gave their lives to defeat the very systems that we are becoming. How can anyone endorse what is happening? How can your soul not cry out in anger and pain? What kind of people are we?
