PROTEST SAFETY TIPS
Comfort Items:
Bring water, snacks, and use sunscreen
Dress appropriately for the weather to be outside for up to 2 hours
Bring a chair if you may have trouble standing for long periods
Situational Awareness:
Be aware of your surroundings
Although the majority of protests in the US are peaceful and nonviolent, you should keep an eye out for potential threats
Give some thought to how you’d respond and where you’d go if there is a need
Inform the protest leaders if you see something suspicious
Peaceful/Nonviolent Attitude:
From Hands Off webpage: “We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontations with those who disagree with our values.”
Know your particular protest’s goals and objectives and prepare your signs accordingly: express what you want to convey but try not to be overly provocative
Strive for a joyful and nonviolent expression of your opinions and values (signs, clothing, facial expressions, etc.)
Emphasize what you are FOR not what you’re against
Have fun as we show like-minded people they’re not alone
Plan to protest as often as you can! This is a long-term project…
