Two Constitutional Amendments Are Coming in November

Two constitutional amendments will be on your November ballot. Here is a short explanation of what they would do and why the McDowell County Democratic Party recommends voting NO on both. These amendments are beneficial to the wealthiest North Carolinians.

Income Tax Cap: This amendment would permanently cap North Carolina's state income-tax rate at 3.5%. Supporters say this could help keep taxes low. We are concerned that putting a tax limit in the Constitution could make it harder for the state to raise money needed for schools, healthcare, roads, and other services in the future.

Property Tax Limits: This amendment would require the General Assembly to limit how much local governments can increase property-tax levies. Supporters say this could protect homeowners from large tax increases. We are concerned that it could make it harder for counties and cities to pay for the services their communities need.
